Gov. Robert F. McDonnell - Announces Confederate History Month

When I first saw this news over on Maybe it just me. I thought it had to be some kind of joke. It wasn't a joke at all.

Gov. Robert F. Mcdonnell (R) for Virgina, states on his official website, that April is now Confederate History Month.

WHEREAS, Virginia has long recognized her Confederate history, the numerous civil war battlefields that mark every region of the state, the leaders and individuals in the Army, Navy and at home who fought for their homes and communities and Commonwealth in a time very different than ours today; and

WHEREAS, it is important for all Virginians to reflect upon our Commonwealth’s shared history, to understand the sacrifices of the Confederate leaders, soldiers and citizens during the period of the Civil War, and to recognize how our history has led to our present
When I think Confederate I think of this flag:

When I see this flag, I think HATE!

I understand why they might want a history month, but couldn't they have worded it differently? Why couldn't have been Civil War History Month?

Allen, growing up in the south, I too only have visions of hateful people when I see that flag. VA is a terribly hateful place under the surface. They love to cover it up in many different ways, but bigotry is bigotry, no matter how you dress it. This "history month" is just an extension of that internalized hatred, whether they can see it or not.

When I see that flag I think "REDNECK" ...and then "hateful redneck." And we some idiots here in central Illinois that display that in the back of their truck windows. Most people here see them and think "redneck!"

It's like a giant leap backwards, isn't it? It's like celebrating the times when blacks had to drink out of a separate drinking fountain than the whites. How stupid is that?

I remember thinking that was a cool flag... then I got old enough to understand what it stood for. I think confederate history is something that we should reflect on as we do the holocaust. Not something to celebrate!
