Free Cell Phones for Welfare Recipients

A friend told me about this. The government is giving Free Cell phones to Welfare Recipients and they are getting 70 free minutes of air time a month.

I did my research on this. I thought there is no way that this could be true, but it is SafeLink Wireless is the provider.

Did I miss something? Why are we catering to a group of people that don't want to work? I understand the ones that cannot but there are so many that could work, but choose to play the system that they now get money and food and now free cell phones. What's next Laptops, TVs, cable television, vacations, A new car?

I have a friend in Indiana that works for FSSA - Family Social Service Administration, and she has told me in the past that people has been in her office stoned off their asses applying for Government Assistant. She said that they are the type that are working the system in their favor, where the ones that really needs it are getting left in the dark.

I am sure some of you know that I was born handicapped, I have had reconstruction surgery on both of my feet. Just so that I could walk like everyone else. I have standards, I want to work, but why do I want to anymore? My taxes are paying for some person to sit back and collect a check, get free rent, free transportation, and now a free cell phone with free minutes.

Maybe I am over reacting, but I don't think I am. Its like the companies that are making you take a drug test so that you can sell shoes in their store. What is up with that? I don't see welfare people taking drug test in order to get all these free things. I don't see them making an effort to find a job and stop this madness.

I honestly think that "We the people" have lost our ways. The Welfare program was set up for those in need. But do these people need a cell phone with minutes?

Wow - that does seem ludicrous. What, pray tell, is the reasoning, behind the cell phone giveaway? So they can call for jobs? I wonder how many ACTUALLY use it to call for jobs? I know finding a pay phone nowadays is hard to do. There has to be a better solution here.

Then I hear of some people who are receiving unemployment, find a low paying job (like fast food) to try to help with the income, and then lose the unemployment checks because their other pay check throws them over the limit. So now they're living on LESS money than if they weren't working, but yet they're trying to better themselves. Shouldn't THEY be rewarded for finding a job?

I did not know that about your handicap. Good for you for persevering and having a good work ethic.

Talking about working the system - - we see it all the time at the church. It does get easier to spot the ones who really need the help as opposed to some just looking for handouts so they don't have to get a job.

I agree with what Pat said about rewarding those who are really trying.
(and I added another comment to your previous blog - - I am behind in reading this week.)
